Stingrays are infamous for their whip-like tails, but did you know that they are actually very gentle animals, unless threatened? These iconic marine animals are actually known as the birds of the ocean because of the way they effortlessly glide through the ocean water.
Stingrays are categorized as bottom feeders, which mean that they hunt on the seafloor and use their mouths like a vacuum to suck up prey. On the menu are crustaceans, like crabs, shrimp, and krill.
Today, 70% of all ocean plastic sinks to the ocean floor. This makes bottom feeders like stingrays vulnerable to consume plastic from the seafloor. In 2019, a stingray was in fact found with a glass bottle, a pack of cigarettes, a book, and a camera in its stomach.
