This is a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of plastic pollution. It was the Gumbo Limbo Nature Centre that first posted the photograph on Facebook of the stranded loggerhead sea turtle and the 104 pieces of plastic found in its stomach.
When baby turtles hatch, they immediately head towards floating seaweed called sargassum, where they spend their first few years in life. With so much plastic in the ocean, fragments of plastic easily stick to the seaweed. Baby turtles mistake the plastic for food and end up eating it. Afterwards, they feel full, but without having received the nutrition they need to survive.
